Hydrogen Embrittlement -- Shroud of Turin -- Nodules -- Microstructural
Zinc plated bolts were prematurely failing in service. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) examination of the fracture showed intergranular failure, secondary cracking and small spherical bubbles on grain facets.
Cause of failure: Hydrogen embrittlement introduced during the zinc plating process.
